It would seem that maybe Rendell would cut some of the 24 (I belive
this is correct) Commonwealth Overseas Trade Offices in places like
Korea, South America, Vietnam, and Israel if his administration is
serious about saving money. Seems like the statement on no out of
state travel is a bit stretched with an upcoming trade trip to Israel
during March. Some info on just one of these trips while Pennsyvania
citizens are threatened with losing their jobs.

Trade Mission to Israel, Jordan & Turkey

Location: Tel Aviv, ISRAEL; Amman, JORDAN; Istanbul, TURKEY

Event Dates: June 15-17, 2009

Pennsylvania’s Office of International Business Development invites
you to travel with us to Israel, Jordan and Turkey. The purpose of
this mission is to assist PA companies in exporting their products and
services.

Meeting face-to-face with prospective customers is crucial to
establishing business relationships, and we can help you meet your
business objectives in these markets. All appointment schedules will
be tailored to accommodate your company’s individual needs.

The registration deadline for this event is March 31, 2009.

For more details please review the registration information (.pdf) or
contact Deb Lenker by phone at 717-720-7365 or by e-mail

If these offices bring in more revenue then they cost, it makes sense to
keep them. Same with any trade delegation abroad.

THEY DONT

The Invent PA Worldwide Assistance Export Network has a map which
shows the locations of the present Pennsylvania Overseas
representatives. This page provides limited information on the
objectives of trade with these countries but no direct links. The
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Korea Trade Office provides some
information on planned and present exports and technologies to South
Korea. The Commonwealth of Pennyslvania's Taiwan Office opened in
November 2005. The Pennsylvania Brazil, China, Germany, Japan,
Vietnam, and Chile offices appears to be recent even in 2007 and
there islittle information at this point. The potential significance
of these trade offices with respect to the environment may be the
exportation of timber and other raw materials. Former Governor Tom
(Crayola) Ridge had been audited on the costs to Pennsylvania
taxpayers due to these overseas offices and visits. The audit of the
overseas expenditures (remember the RIDGE ADMINISTRATION left leaving
the incoming RENDELL ADMINISTRATION with a record multi-billion dollar
deficit) can be viewed online at the Pennsylvania Auditor General's
Homepage. Does the objectives of this program have similar goals as
the World Trade Organization? Possibly.
